My Career Plan
My Career of Interest: Lawyer

My Reflection
Becoming a successful attorney requires deep knowledge of law and government, including statutes, case law, and regulatory frameworks. Mastery of the English language and legal writing is essential for drafting briefs, contracts, and persuasive pleadings. Coursework in constitutional law, contracts, property, civil procedure, and legal research provides the doctrinal foundation lawyers rely on in practice. Undergraduate majors such as law and legal studies, history, social science, and philosophy help develop the analytical background useful in law school and beyond. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills enable attorneys to evaluate complex facts, identify legal issues, and craft strategic solutions. Effective research skills and comfort with legal databases and technology are necessary to locate precedent and manage electronic discovery. Oral communication, persuasion, and interpersonal skills are critical for client counseling, negotiation, and courtroom advocacy. Teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, paralegals, and experts support thorough case preparation and high‑quality client service. Administrative knowledge and computer literacy help attorneys manage caseloads, deadlines, and modern practice tools efficiently. These knowledge areas, skills, and the typical educational pathway—four years of undergraduate study, three years of law school, and passing the bar exam—are reflected in ONET OnLine* and the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
